Do I Have to Remove Solar Panels to Replace My Roof?

· 5 min read

Part of the complete guide: Failed Solar in Florida: The Complete Homeowner's Guide

If you need a new roof in Florida and have solar panels on it, the panels almost always have to come off first. The real question is whether they go back on — and if your system is dead or the installer is gone, that's a decision worth thinking through.

Why the panels have to come off

  • You can't properly replace the roof deck and shingles with panels and racking mounted to it.
  • Roofing warranties generally won't cover a roof with someone else's penetrations left in place.
  • Florida's permitting and code expectations treat the roof and the solar as connected work.

Remove-and-reinstall vs. remove for good

If the system works and you want to keep it, a “remove and reinstall” (R&R) puts the panels back after the new roof. But if the system never worked, the installer is gone, or the equipment is failing, paying to reinstall a dead system rarely makes sense — and permanent removal plus a clean roof is often the better call.

Either way, this should be done by a licensed roofing and solar contractor so the disconnect is to code and the roof is properly sealed and warrantied.

We inspect first and give you a firm number — whether that's remove-and-reinstall or remove and re-roof for good.

Frequently asked questions

Do solar panels have to be removed to replace a roof?

Almost always, yes. The panels and racking are mounted into the roof, so they must come off to properly replace it. A licensed contractor can either reinstall them afterward or remove them permanently if the system isn't worth keeping.

Is it worth reinstalling solar panels on a new roof?

If the system works and you want it, yes. If it never worked, the installer is gone, or the equipment is failing, paying to reinstall a dead system usually doesn't pencil out — permanent removal and a clean roof is often smarter.
